Anti-Slip and Slip Resistance Testing of Resin Floors
Introducing our TRL Pendulum Slip Tester
At the beginning of 2013 we invested in a Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) Pendulum for slip resistance testing. The British Standard, BS 7976, Pendulum Slip Test forms the basis of all floor slip risk assessments. Originally designed to replicate the action of a slipping foot, the pendulum skid tester has been used extensively for the slip testing of indoor flooring and surfaces.
The BS 7976 Pendulum Slip Testing method is the preferred slip test method of the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and UK Slip Resistance Group. This is, in part, due to its extensive history in slip risk assessment and strong correlation to slip incidents. The pendulum slip test remains one of the few methods to accurately recreate the hydrodynamic squeeze film generated when a human slips in wet conditions. Though the pendulum slip tester is somewhat awkward to use and requires an experienced operator to avoid misleading or erroneous results, it is considered the best method of pedestrian slip testing and is quoted extensively in slip and fall legal proceedings.
As we now have a TRL Pendulum, our Technical Supervisor, Alex Holdway, is able to complete laboratory tests in-house to give us a comprehensive catalogue of the slip resistance values for our range of products. These values were compared to those achieved by an independent company for our most popular resin floor products. Click image to view video.
Now, in addition to the laboratory anti-slip test data for our products, we can also use the TRL Pendulum for on-the-job anti-slip testing for clients. As an optional extra, we offer a slip risk assessment service where we visit the site and complete a series of tests to measure the anti-slip performance of the resin floor we have installed and confirm it is consistent with our laboratory data.
The purchase of the TRL Pendulum will allow us to provide comprehensive slip resistance data for our resin floor products to potential customers and, as part of our Total Responsibility Package, also ensures our clients are assured of the anti-slip qualities of the installed resin floor and are protected from potential slip incidents and any associated costs.
